Child Welfare Durban and District

Child Welfare Durban and District is a child welfare organisation concentrating on core concerns: neglected and abused children; HIV/Aids infected and affected children; providing homes and family care options for vulnerable children and empowering marginalised and deprived communities.

Child Welfare Durban and District was constituted on 1 October 1999 as a result of the merger between Durban Child and Family Welfare Society, Child Family and Community Care Centre; Umlazi and District Child Welfare Society. The former Durban Child and Family Welfare Society and Child family and Community Care Centre had 81, 73 and 75 years of service respectively.
Metrofile in Durban focuses on the welfare of the children of tomorrow, and as a result has assisted 18 383 beneficiaries per month, with a total contribution figure of R1772.
The core function of the organisation is child protection, targeting the poor and previously disadvantaged communities, including informal settlements within Durban. The organisation commits to protecting the rights and promotes the quality of life for children, families and communities in Durban.
The organisation strives to preserve the family unit, thereby only removing a child when it is absolutely necessary.

Children affected by HIV/Aids

KwaZulu Natal is the province with the largest percentage of children expected to be orphaned and the organisation focuses on children who become integrated into extended family and community structures without outside assistance. In addition to the range of family and community care options available, the Family Support Programme is aimed at facilitating the care of orphans and children affected with HIV/Aids within their own family.

The aim of the programme is:

•    To promote the early identification and rapid referral of vulnerable children including orphans

•    To ensure the adequate care of orphans already integrated into their extended family care

•    To ensure the adequate care of infants and young children infected with HIV/Aids living with their own family.
