Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation striving to treat and prevent HIV and other related infections in South Africa. 

Based in Cape Town, the foundation is run in association with the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre at the University of Cape Town’s Institute of  Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine. 

Metrofile has contributed 6612.56 so far towards the running costs of the foundation. The foundation added Metrofile’s name to its list of “Friends of the Foundation’. Metrofile staff gave of their time and experience in spending 3 days packing nearly 200 boxes with documents for the foundation. Metrofile also sponsored Record Destruction Bins to the foundation. 

The foundation has formulated initiatives with its academic and social expertise: 

  • The provision of antiretroviral therapy 
  • Operating a free mobile HIV testing unit 
  • Studies into adherence strategies, adherence to monitoring 
  • HIV’s interaction with Tuberculosis 
  • Training and guidance of health care professionals 
  • Preparing communities for HIV vaccine clinical trials 
  • Providing adolescent HIV protection and improving women’s health 

Research 

The Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation commits to high standards of research and medical care, alongwith effective community development programmes. 

Current research projects and collaborations: 

  • Pharmaceutical trials conducted by DTH Centre’s Clinical Trials Unit 
  • HIV vaccine trials and preparedness studies operational from the newly launched Emavundleni Centre in old cross roads 
  • Antiretroviral Treatment and adherence strategies 
  • Psychological studies in adolescent sexual health and sexual risk patterns 
  • Patterns of risk behaviour and pharmaceutical prevention methods for gay men 
  • TB/HIV interaction research based out of The Hannan Crusaid Treatment Centre in Gugulethu. 

Training 

The DTHF realised the growing demand for training in the management of HIV and Aids and as a result opened a training unit in January 2004. 

The training unit has become actively engaged in the training and equipping of health care professionals, lay counsellors and educators to meet the challenges of HIV care and prevention.
