The Edenvale Care Centre is an HIV/Aids focused organisation offering ongoing support to individuals in need of physical, psychological and social care due to issues arising from HIV/Aids. The organisation offers its support by providing a counselling support service for those with the HIV/Aids virus and for their families and friends, as well as physical care for those in the terminal stages of the disease.
The Edenvale Care Centre was established in 2001 (??) and is located on the corner of 6th and 4th streets in Edenvale, Johannesburg and has grown since its early beginnings. The home was renovated in order to accommodate the counselling and care giving facilities, alongwith the administration of the activities Board.
Metrofile has played a key role in supporting the home, by agreeing to be the beneficiary for 13 adults per month, with a year to date figure of R12 000.
Metrofile is currently contributing R1000 per month to the Edenvale Care Centre and the centre has been very accommodating in taking in Metrofile staff and acqaintances where hospitals are not in a position to accommodate them.
The home focuses on providing practical skills to the patients and their families to cope with balancing every day life with the effects of the disease – involving the family in the care of patients so they can live as close to normal life as possible.
Fulltime counsellors work at the home and have added to the homes services by introducing an AIDS line, placing sufferers in touch with a counsellor to set up an appointment, for the counsellor to offer the sufferer comprehensive counselling support covering lifestyle, trauma and grief counselling.
The Centre has been instrumental in educating businesses and the public about HIV/Aids and eradicating the stigma attached to the HIV/Aids virus. A qualified Training Officer is based at the home and 3 courses a year are carried out at the Centre for the training of volunteer counsellors. Workshops are conducted at the home on a regular basis and businesses are able to request a workshop to be carried out on its premises.
