McCord Hospital

The McCord Hospital is a centre for health education, training and research locally and internationally, based in Overport in Durban.

Dr James McCord opened McCord Hospital in May 1909, initially only providing medical care to the Zulu community of Durban. Today, this hospital has grown to provide top quality affordable healthcare for all population groups.
Metrofile in Durban has supported the growth of the hospital by being the beneficiary to 13 987 beneficiaries, with a total contribution of R6500. McCord celebrated its 100th anniversary in May this year – Metrofile joined in on this celebration by sponsoring R5000 to the hospital. McCord indicated a need for an intelligent onsite records management system. Metrofile came to the party by offering this system at a greatly reduced rate as well as donating computer equipment to the hospital.
The McCord Hospital is a Christian based hospital, accommodating 142 patients, with a vision to expand the hospital to 256 beds, in order to meet the growing demand for HIV-related patients and other services. This increase in the number of beds will enable more patients to be treated and will facilitate the expansion of the nursing training programmes.
The McCord hospital is known for its compassionate care and high standards in healthcare delivery and for being at the forefront of medical advances. Historically, McCord has played a crucial role in the training of doctors, nurses, midwifes, the majority of whom have been black South Africans.
The hospital strives to facilitate and provide appropriate effective, efficient Primary Health Care that includes preventative, promotive, curative, rehabilitative and palliative services at primary, secondary and selected tertiary levels. Along with this, the hospital also strives to develop health services in partnership with selected communities.
