Save the Children

Save the Children is an independent charity organisation operating in 52 countries around the world, including Pretoria in South Africa. The organisation provides support for the four main areas of a child’s survival: food, healthcare, education and protection.
This year, Save the Children will be celebrating it’s 90th anniversary. Metrofile has assisted in the ongoing growth and stability of this organisation, by supporting 62 544 beneficiaries per month, with a total to date contribution figure of R5765.60.
Save the Children is proud of their achievement in reaching nearly 6 million children through their work and strives to continuously promote children’s rights around the world.
The organisation employs 4 600 staff around the world who focus on the following essential survival needs of children:

Hunger

A ground breaking approach has been established by the organisation in predicting food shortages and preventing malnutrition, resulting in emergency aid to as many as 23 million people across Africa. More than half of these people are children.  Chronic malnutrition is a silent killer amongst around 58 million children worldwide. Paying cash payments to families is a core part of the organisation’s work, in order to reduce malnutrition. Cash is more flexible for families and gives them a wider selection of choice.
Save the Children promotes the benefits of breastfeeding to mothers, health workers and communities.
Health and HIV/Aids
Save the Children runs healthcare programmes and campaign work in developing countries to:

  • Advise health managers
  • Train health workers
  • Provide equipment and transport
  • Build health facilities

Effective Peer Education is a practical manual, published by the organisation which advises young people on the prevention of HIV/Aids, as well as care for HIV positive children and those orphaned by Aids to be cared for in the community.

Education

The organisation ensures that children growing up in the toughest circumstances get a decent education, in particular – children facing conflict, poverty and discrimination. Local organisations are supported to set up schools and pre-school centres in refugee camps. Save the Children has produced a “toolkit’ giving guidance on starting and managing an emergency education programme.

Protection

Through programmes, the organisation protects vulnerable children and demonstrates the most effective ways of helping children who are at risk. The evidence is then used to lobby government and international organisations for more effective child protection solutions.
