The realisation of the local community’s dream to provide quality and accessible schooling special needs children in the area, the Paarl School was established in 1978 in Brackenfell in the Western Cape. Catering for children with cerebral palsy, specific learning disabilities and the physically disablements, the school can accommodate 310 pupils including 42 boarders from the age of three years all the way through to Grade 9. The school also runs six practical classes and a work preparation group.
Metrofile’s support
The Paarl School’s relationship with Metrofile goes back some years with the company having been providing learners with work experience. Regular opportunities are afforded to learners to spend the day at Metrofile learning the ropes and getting experience in the skills they need to enter the workplace.
In 2009 Metrofile stepped up their support of the school with the donation of a much needed 16-seater
The School’s Curriculum
Pre-school Section
The Pre-school section has four classes (12 learners per class); Junior/Middle Group (3-5 years); Pre-primary (5-6 years); Preparatory Grade 1 (6-7 years) and a group for English speaking learners.
Foundation Phase
The foundation phase consists of learners from Grade 1 to Grade 3. A maximum of 14 learners per class are accommodated.
Intermediate Phase
The intermediate phase consists of learners from Grade 4 to 6. A maximum of 15 learners per class group are accommodated.
Senior Phase
There are approximately 70 learners in this group which consists of six classes.
Practical classes
Classes catering for learners that are mentally as well as physically/cerebrally handicapped are provided, as is medical and therapeutic support.
